Chapter 15

Sunday, March 27, 3:30 p.m.

A second after I muted the sound on the television, I picked up the cordless phone. "Matthias Laing."

"Matt, I … wait, Jade."

"But Mommy, you're taking too long."

I sat up and pressed the phone to my ear. "Toni, what's wrong?"

"It's Murphy."

"What's wrong with him?"

"He disappeared."

"How?"

Jade's voice interrupted Toni again and she sighed. "Can you come over?"

"Sure, is there anything special you want me to do?"

"No. Just come. Jade is in a state and I … "

" … Mommy, can I talk to him?"

"Hang on a sec, hon. Matt, hold for Jade."

"Doc, we can't find Murphy." Jade spoke in a shaky voice and I suspected she'd been crying. "Are you on your way?"

"In a minute."

"Please hurry up and come."

There was a little shuffle and then Toni spoke into my ear. "I guess I'll see you in a bit."

"Yeah, you've asked around already, right?"

"Yes, but no luck."

"All right, I'll be there in a bit."

I went to the bedroom to get my shoes on, switched off the television and was out the door with my keys in hand.

As I swung out of my road onto the main, my lips twisted in a bitter smile.

My leaving them the first time today had been involuntary and somehow it seemed that I kept being put on a side burner and then had to swoop in to save the day.

By no means was I resentful of Jade and her needs. My disquiet had to do with Toni and our situation, but I didn't want my mind to continue down a negative path so I turned on the radio and found a station blasting seventies music. The songs kept me occupied as long as I focused on the lyrics.

In ten minutes, I was parked in Toni's yard and before I'd gotten one foot out of the car, Jade stood outside the door dashing tears away from her eyes with the back of her hand.

Toni stood on the verandah watching us with an expression I wasn't sure how to interpret. Maybe a mixture of confusion and sympathy, if I had to put a name to it.

I opened the car door and spoke into the open space. "Precious, you have to step back a little."

Jade did as I asked and when I switched off the engine and sat sideways, she ran into my arms, sobbing.

Ridley trotted to her side, whining deep in his throat.

My breath caught and I forced myself to take a big draft of air into my lungs, stroking Jade's hair while I did. "Come on, hon, don't cry. We'll find him, okay?"

She nodded, but didn't stop crying.

I had no clue what my next move should be, but I went with my instincts and picked her up. After kicking the door of the car shut, I carried Jade to the verandah and went past Toni into the house.

Sitting with Jade on my lap, I pulled her hands away from her face. Then I wiped her tears away with my thumbs. "You want to tell me what happened.
